Self Healing Ring with IP6810 or IP6820

Loop Telecom's line of Ethernet Access devices includes both the IP6810 and its close relative the IP6820. These network termination units (NTUs) are especially built for ring network topologies. The circular nature of a ring topology allows for every single node to be able to reach every other node without the vast number of direct connections of a mesh topology.

In order to prevent packet forwarding loops, one connection of the loop is intentionally blocked. This is blocked virtually in software. If a break in a line is detected by a node, it sends control signals across the network to release the block and allow traffic to flow through.
 
For simple circular topologies, the IP6810 uses the proprietary LEAPS standard (Loop Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching). The IP6820 implements a similar version called G.8032 which complies to an international ITU-T standard. These protocols define the control messages to send out in case of link failure. Both provide less than 50 ms of switching/recovery time.
 
The self healing nature of the both the IP6810 and the IP6820 means that link breaks (topology changes) do not cause extended lapses in coverage. Of course, it is still necessary to repair broken links when they occur so that the protection can restored for the future.
